A bottle and its closure may look like two relatively simple components, but they need to work together as a complete packaging system.
The bottle neck affects how a cap, dispensing closure or fitment attaches to the container, while the closure itself can influence sealing, dispensing, tamper evidence and how the customer ultimately uses the product.
For that reason, we always recommend considering bottle neck finish and closure compatibility early when selecting or developing plastic packaging.
What Is a Bottle Neck Finish?
The neck finish is the area at the top of a bottle that interfaces with the closure. Its dimensions and features determine which caps or closures can be used with it.
This can include the:
- Diameter of the neck
- Thread profile
- Sealing surfaces
As well as other details required for the closure to locate and function correctly.
You may see neck specifications included within our product descriptions. For example, our standard packaging range includes formats such as 28/410 and SK38-22. These references help us identify the neck and compatible closure rather than simply describing the overall size or capacity of the bottle.
Getting this interface correct is important. A cap that appears to fit is not necessarily a closure that will provide the required performance once the pack is filled, sealed, transported and used.
Choosing the Appropriate Cap or Closure
We select closures around what the finished packaging actually needs to do.
A straightforward screw cap may be suitable where the main requirement is opening and resealing the bottle. Other products may need a:
- Flip-top closure
- Trigger
- Dispensing component
- Measuring cap
- Roll-on fitment
- Tamper-evident or child-resistant closure
We manufacture caps, closures and dispensing components using injection moulding, while our standard packaging range includes bottles that can be paired with options such as screw caps, flip-top closures, triggers and roll-on components.
The product inside the bottle matters as well. A closure for a personal care product may have very different requirements from packaging used for food, pharmaceutical or household products.
Why Closure Compatibility Matters
Compatibility involves more than whether the closure can physically be fitted to the bottle.
We need the complete pack to perform consistently during filling, sealing, storage, transport and everyday use. Tolerances, fit and sealing requirements therefore need to be considered alongside the product itself and the manufacturing process.
If these areas are not properly matched, problems can include poor sealing, leakage or inconsistent closure performance.
This becomes particularly important when packaging is being used on an automated filling or assembly line. Small dimensional differences that are barely noticeable on an individual bottle can become much more significant when thousands of units need to be filled and closed consistently.
Neck Design Can Influence How We Manufacture the Bottle
The required neck can also influence the most appropriate manufacturing process.
We use injection blow moulding for applications where precise neck features are particularly important, including roll-on deodorant bottles. We can also manufacture bottles and containers using extrusion blow moulding and PET stretch blow moulding, depending on the required material, design and application.
This is why we do not treat the bottle, material, neck and closure as completely separate decisions.
We Consider the Complete Pack
When we are developing new plastic packaging, we start by understanding how the finished product needs to perform.
How will it be filled? Does it need to dispense a controlled amount? Will the user repeatedly open and close it? Is tamper evidence required? What sealing performance is expected? Will it need to work with existing filling equipment?
Once we understand those requirements, we can help select or develop the bottle neck and closure around them.
We manufacture both standard and bespoke plastic bottles, caps and closures at our UK facility and can support customers with neck finish, closure compatibility, material selection and manufacturing requirements as part of the wider packaging development process.
If you are developing a new pack or reviewing an existing bottle and closure combination, speak to our team about the complete requirement before committing to production.
